This year’s goals

As I start the new school year, I always like to develop a couple of quick goals for myself.  They’re never anything formal or too complicated-they are just things I’d like to work on.  In the middle of last year, I transitioned into a new leadership role, so this is the start of my first full year tackling this role.  So, for the first time, I am not writing classroom based goals, and obviously the big goal is to continue learning the job as best I can, but aside from that, here are my two major goals for the year:

  1.  Get out around campus!  It is easy in this job to hide in the office.  There are always students to see about something, and there is always paperwork to complete or situations to follow up on.  But what I love the most about working in a school is seeing and interacting with students and teachers.  Getting out around campus between periods and during classes will allow this to happen.  It also, though, will make me approachable to all involved, better monitor for student safety, build relationships with students and staff, and help bridge any divide between administration and the rest of the school.   It;s super easy to hole away in the comfort of the office–=I need to get out!
  2. Get better about communicating with parents.  I deal with a lot of students and call parents all the time, but it’s something that falls by the wayside too often for me.  I call whenever I issue major discipline, but I often put off calling and forget for issues that don’t include discipline.  For example when students make statements regarding a peer conflict, and I deal with it without assigning discipline, I often forget to call.  I need to be better about this sort of thing, to keep those lines of communication open.

There you have it-2 simple goals for the year.  I’m excited for this new school year, and hopefully it’s going to be a great one!
